People who live by the same code are rendered mutually predictable to one another. They act in keeping with each other's expectations and desires. Jordan B. Peterson Shared beliefs simplify the world, as well, because people who know what to expect from one another can act together to tame the world. Jordan B. Peterson It isn't precisely that people will fight for what they believe. They will fight, instead, tot maintain the match between what they believe, what they expect, and what they desire. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back

Over the millennia, animals who must co-habit with others in the same territories have in consequence learned many tricks to establish dominance, while risking the least amount of possible damage. Jordan B. Peterson Being, for the Taoists--reality itself-- is composed of two opposing principles, often translated as feminine and masculine, or even more narrowly as female and male. However, yin and yang are accurately understood as chaos and order. Jordan B. Peterson It is also a mistake to conceptualize nature romantically. Jordan B. Peterson Dominance hierarchies are older than trees. Jordan B. Peterson The acts of life we repeat every day need to be automatized. They must be turned into stable and reliable habtis, so the los their complexity and gain predictablity and simplicity. Jordan B. Peterson Standing up means voluntarily accepting the burden of Being. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping.

It is difficult to conclude anything from this set of facts except that people appear to love their dogs, cats, ferrets and birds (and maybe even their lizards) more than themselves. Jordan B. Peterson Chaos and order make up the eternal, transcendent environment of the living. Jordan B. Peterson How could the nature of man ever reach its full potential without challenge and danger? How dull and contemptible would we become if there was no longer reason to pay attention? Jordan B. Peterson Question for parents: do you want to make your children safe, or strong? Jordan B. Peterson Beauty shames the ugly. Strength shames the weak. Death shames the living--and the Ideal shames us al. Thus we fear it, resent it--even hate it. Jordan B. Peterson But those who see into the future can also eternally see trouble coming, and must then prepare for all contingencies and possibilities. Jordan B. Peterson Perhaps Heaven is something you must build, and immortality something you must earn. Jordan B. Peterson [Dogs ands cats are predators, made into pets...] They're hungry, not evil. Jordan B. Peterson darkness... You are not simply your own possession to torture and mistreat. This is partly because your Being is inexorably tied up with that of others, and your mistreatment of yourself can have catastrophic consequences for others. Jordan B. Peterson To treat yourself as if you were someone you are responsible for helping is, instead, to consider what would be truly good for you. This is not "what you want". It is also not "what would make you happy". Jordan B. Peterson Every time you give a child something sweet, you make that child happy. That does not mean that you should do nothing for children except feed them candy. "Happy" is by no means synonymous with "good". Jordan B. Peterson He whose life has a why can bear almost any how. Friedrich Nietzsche

Rule 3. Make friends with people who want the best for you.

Nonetheless, people will often accept or even amplify their own suffering, as well as that of others, if they can brandish it as evidence of the world's injustice. Jordan B. Peterson A hero is something positive, not just the absence of evil. Jordan B. Peterson Down is al lot easier than up. Jordan B. Peterson Assume first that you are doing the easiest thing, and not the most difficult. Jordan B. Peterson It's far more likely that a given individual has just decided to reject the path upward, because of its difficulty. Jordan B. Peterson It's easier not to think, and not to do, and not to care. It's easier to put off until tomorrow what needs to be done today, and drown the upcoming months and years in today's cheap pleasures. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.

You might be winning but you're not growing, and growing might be the most important form of winning. Jordan B. Peterson You mus decide what to let go, and what to persue. Jordan B. Peterson What you aim at determines what you see. Jordan B. Peterson That's how you deal with the overwhelming complexity of the world: you ignore it, while you concentrate minutely on your private concerns. Jordan B. Peterson Life doesn't have the problem. You do. At least that realization leaves you with some options. Jordan B. Peterson You can only find out what you actually believe (rather than what you think you believe) by watching how you act. Jordan B. Peterson Faith is not the childish belief in magic. That is ignorance or even willful blindness. It is instead the realization that the tragic irrationalities of life must be counterbalanced by an equally irrational commitment to the essential goodness of Being. Jordan B. Peterson Align yourself, in your soul, with Truth and the Highest Good. Jordan B. Peterson Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 5: Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them

Do not let your childres do anything that makes you dislike them Jordan B. Peterson Each person's private trouble cannot be solved by a social revolution, because revolutions are destabilizing and dangerous. Jordan B. Peterson In general, people improve with age, rather than worsening, becoming kinder, more conscientious, and more emotionally stable as they mature. Jordan B. Peterson It is an act of responsibility to discipline a child. Jordan B. Peterson Instead of going to bed wisely and peacefully, children will fight night-time unconsciousness until they are staggered by fatigue. They are also perfectly willing to provoke adults, while exploring the complex contours of the social environment, just like juvenile chimps harassing the adults in their troupes. Jordan B. Peterson Two-year-olds, statistically speaking, are the most violent of people. Jordan B. Peterson Scared parents think that a crying child is always sad or hurt. This is simply not true. Anger is one of the most common reasons for crying. Jordan B. Peterson Watching people respond to children restores your faith in human nature. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 6: Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.

Stop saying those things that make you weak and ashamed. Say only those things that make you strong. Do only those things that you could speak of with honour. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 7. Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)

Here's a productive symbolic idea: the future is a judmental father. Jordan B. Peterson ... sacrifice now, to gain later. Jordan B. Peterson The succesful among us delay gratification. The succesful among us bargain with the future. Jordan B. Peterson Each human being has an immense capacity for evil. Each human being understands, a priori, perhaps nog what is good, but certainly what is not. Jordan B. Peterson How could I use my time to make things better, instead of worse? Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 8. Tell the Truth - or, at least, don't lie.

Paranoid people are hyper-alert and hyper-focused. Jordan B. Peterson Taking the easy way out or telling the truth - those are not merely two different choices. They are different pathways through life. Jordan B. Peterson The faculty of reationality inclines dangerously to pride: all I know is all that needs to be known. Pride falls in love with its own creations, and tries to make them absolute. Jordan B. Peterson If you betray yourself, if you say untrue things, if you act out a lie, you weaken your character. If you have a weak character, then adversity will mow you down when it appears, as it will, inevitably. Jordan B. Peterson The better ambitions have to do with the development of character and ability, rather than status and power. Status you can lose. You carry character with you wherever you go, and it allows you to prevail against adversity. Jordan B. Peterson If you pay attention to what you do and say, you can learn to feel a state of internal division and weakness when you are misbehaving and misspeaking. It's an embodied sensation, not a thought. Jordan B. Peterson Everyone needs a concrete, specific goal-an ambition, and a purpose-to limit chaos and make intelligible sense of his or her life. Jordan B. Peterson Tortured by constant failure, the individual becomes bitter. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't.

However, people are often willing to produce a lot of collateral damage if they can retain their theory. Jordan B. Peterson Thinking is an internal dialogue between two or more different views of the word. Jordan B. Peterson True thinking is complex and demanding. It requires you to be articulate speaker ande careful, judicious listener, at the same time. It involves conflict. Jordan B. Peterson [the purpose of memory] You remember the past not so that it is 'accurately recorded', to say it again, but so that you are prepared for the future. Jordan B. Peterson When someone opposes you, it is very tempting to oversimplify, parody, or distort his or her position. This is acounterproductive game, designed both to harm the dissenter and to unjustly raise your personal status. Jordan B. Peterson The fact is important enough to bear repeating: people organize their brains with conversation. If they don't have anyone to tell their story to, they lose their minds. Like hoarders, they cannot unclutter themselves. Jordan B. Peterson But if you are meditating as you converse, the you listen to the other person, and say the new and original things that can rise from deep within of their own accord. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 10. Be precise in your speech

When things collapse around us our perception disappears, and we act. [...] We realize, painfully, that our sense of competence and completeness is gone; it was just a dream. Jordan B. Peterson If you leave things vague, then you'll never know what is one thing and what is another. Everything will bleed into everything else. This makes the world too complex to be managed. Jordan B. Peterson You can't get from point A to point B unless you are already at point A, and if you're just 'anywhere' the chances you are at point A are very small indeed. Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 11. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding

People motivated to make things better usually aren't concerned with changing other people-or, if they are, they take responsibility for making the same changes to themselves (and first). Jordan B. Peterson ... the fact that power plays a role in human motivation does not mean that it plays the only role, or even the primary role. Jordan B. Peterson There are only two major reasons for resentment: being taken advantage of (or allowing yourself to be taken adventage of), or whiny refusal to adopt responsibility and grow up. If you're resentful, look for the reasons. Jordan B. Peterson You might think, 'if they loved me, they would know what to do.' That is the voice of resentment. Jordan B. Peterson Men enforce a code of behaviour on each other, when working together. Do your work. Pull your weight. Stay awake and pay attention. Don't whine or be touchy. Stand up for your friends. Don't suck up and don't snitch. Don't be a slave to stypid rules. [etc.] Jordan B. Peterson

Rule 12 Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street

[Zen koan] Imagine a Being who is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. What does such a Being lack? The answer? Limitation. Jordan B. Peterson Thinking leads inexorably to the abyss. I did not work for Tolstoy. It might not even have worked for Nietzsche, who arguably thought more clearly about such things than anyone in history. Jordan B. Peterson ... it's noticing, not thinking, that does the trick. Jordan B. Peterson Jordan B. Peterson

end

What shall I do with my life? Aim for Paradise, and concentrate on today. Jordan B. Peterson

Of "Shoot for the moon, while staying on earth."

Always place your becoming above your current being. Jordan B. Peterson It is better, proverbially, to rule your own spirit than to rule a city. It's easier to subdue an enemy without than one within. Maybe the environmental problem is ultimately spiritual. If we put ourselves in order, perhaps we will do the same for the world. Of course, what else would a psycholigist think? Jordan B. Peterson
